Queer Waterfall Hike with the Reproductive Freedom Fund of NH - White Mountains, New Hampshire

May 30, 2026 — 10:00 am - 3:00 pm ET
Last day to register: May 28, 2026

Have you ever wanted to hike to an 80 foot waterfall? Join Volunteer Jess and the Reproductive Freedom Fund of NH for a relaxing afternoon day hike in the forest.

The ReproFund works to alleviate financial burdens to reproductive and gender affirming healthcare for those living and seeking it in NH. This event will be part of the Repro Fund's Spring Reprolympics series to help raise funds for their queer care program! All event proceeds will go to the Repro Fund!

This hike is a 5 mile out-and-back trail, with 1090 feet of elevation gain. We will move at a pace that matches the slowest hiker so we can all fully enjoy each others company while spending time outdoors.

The trail will be mostly flat with a few moderate sections along a brook. You can expect to be walking on uneven surfaces over rocks and roots, through mud, and across some wooden boardwalk paths. We will plan to stop during the hike to take a longer rest and eat snacks together, so please plan to pack food and bring plenty of water with you!

The trailhead is off of a road near private property so make sure to pay attention to designated parking signs.

We ask folks under the age of 18 to please register themselves and an adult to accompany them. If you require a service dog to attend, please let us know and we’ll collaborate with you on how to keep you both comfortable and hydrated at this event.

Let's enjoy these precious summer evenings with a Pride Month kick-off hike at a nearby trail! We will do a loop hike that is approximately 5 miles in length at a popular Three Rivers Park District park, just 15 minutes South of Minneapolis. Starting at 6pm, we will hike along a very well maintained and well signed trail that loops around many small lakes, where wildlife and foliage often abound.

Pride Paddle & Pull - Massachusetts

Pride Paddle & Pull - Massachusetts

June 6, 2026 — 2:00 - 5:00 pm ET
Last day to register: June 4, 2026

Paddle with a purpose AND celebrate pride month together — help the Connecticut River Conservancy (CRC) and the Friends of Lake Warner remove the invasive water chestnut from our waterways! For this free, 3-hour group paddle event we will be removing this plant together while enjoying each other's company on beautiful Lake Warner. Afterwards, join us for pizza, cider, and connections at Carr’s Cider House from 5:30-7pm!

Water chestnut is a harmful aquatic invasive species, which is known to take over stretches of water. When left unchecked, water chestnut has the potential to decimate ecosystems and eliminate recreational opportunities. Fortunately, it is easily identifiable, and smaller infestations can be managed with trained volunteers hand-pulling the plant. The key to keeping water chestnut from invading new areas is to remove plants before they have a chance to set seed.

This event is a collaboration between Connecticut River Conservancy (CRC), Friends of Lake Warner, Pride Day on the River, and The Venture Out Project. CRC will provide a guided interactive program for participants to learn more about aquatic invasive species, the local watershed and safe paddling instruction for all experience levels. This is a fun, satisfying activity — combining paddling, teamwork, enjoying beautiful scenery and wildlife.

Each participant is required to register and consent to CRC’s liability waiver using the register button.

Bring your own canoe or kayak and personal flotation device (PFD), if you have one. If not, we have a limited number of foldable kayaks and canoe spots with paddles, and PFD's available to borrow on a first come first served basis. Please note that the max paddler height for the kayaks is 6'2" and the max paddler weight is 250 lbs.

We will launch from an access point at Lake Warner in Hadley, MA and there will be a mixture of paddling for short stretches and floating while pulling water chestnut. Instructions on invasive plant removal will be provided. There are also on-land support roles available for those who do not wish to paddle or be in a boat. Event pre-registration is required.

After the pull event, join us for cider and pizza at Carr’s Cider House.

Should you have any questions or concerns, please email kbeerman@ctriver.org or call 802-318-1390.

We ask folks under the age of 18 to please register themselves and an adult to accompany them. If you require a service dog to attend, please let us know and we’ll collaborate with you on how to keep you both comfortable and hydrated at this event.

Are frog and toad your friends? Do you want to look under logs to see if the salamanders are home? Do you wonder about the lives of the red efts you see while hiking? Would you help a turtle cross the road? Is your response to snakes more, “Neat!” Than, “Eek!”? If you find reptiles and amphibians fascinating, come herping with us! It’s like birding, but for our crawling friends! Join volunteer Amy as guest expert Rachel Keeffe, PhD helps us find these wonderful animals and teaches us about their lives!

This event will be slow paced with frequent stops to look for, watch or examine the reptiles and amphibians we find. While we may walk up to 1.75 miles we will prioritize finding creatures over reaching a certain destination. We always walk to the pace for the slowest person. All experience levels are welcome but if you have an allergy or phobias to any of these animals it may be best to pick a different event. We will be walking on forest paths that may require stepping over rocks and roots. There are no bathrooms at this trailhead.

About our expert: Dr. Rachel Keeffe’s lifelong love of reptiles and amphibians inspired her to explore biology research opportunities during her undergraduate studies at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst. These research experiences ignited her desire to pursue a PhD in Zoology at the University of Florida, where she studied the evolutionary morphology and biomechanics of frogs. Dr. Keeffe continued her academic training as a postdoctoral research fellow at Mount Holyoke College, where she studied patterns of coevolution in snake genitalia. Throughout her career, Dr. Keeffe has developed a teaching style focused on hands-on learning experiences, collaborative learning environments, and using art as a means to understand scientific concepts.

Spring Warbler Walk - Southern New Hampshire

May 9, 2026 — 8:30 am - 12:00 pm ET
Rain date: May 10, 2026
Last day to register: May 8, 2026

It’s warbler season, that time of year when small, bright songbirds return to New England, and birders flock to see them! Enjoy community while looking and listening for these beautiful jewel-like creatures with volunteers Amy and Sam in southwest New Hampshire. Warblers might be the stars of the day, but we’ll gladly take time to admire the many other bird species that inhabit this area. Bald eagles and ospreys nest nearby. Cute, fuzzy Canada goose babies are guarded by watchful parents. Scarlet tanagers, Baltimore orioles, and various weird ducks are frequently seen along this trail. This mostly flat route is a beautiful spot, especially when the air is filled with birdsong!

All experience levels are welcome! We’ll help each other see and identify the birds. Binoculars, or other devices to help you see, such as small scopes or cameras with a zoom lens, are highly recommended for this event but they are not required to attend. We'll also have some binoculars to lend. More detailed information regarding our meeting location will be shared with registered participants prior to the event.

Accessibility: We will plan on walking up to 2.8 miles round trip (out and back) along a wide, mostly level, unpaved trail, moving slowly and frequently stopping to search and observe. The trail surface is hard-packed dirt with some potholes and puddles when it rains. There are some weedy sections that may be a little overgrown in the spring. Portions of the trail are shaded, but much of the route is in full sun. There are no benches on this trail, and no restrooms on site.

We ask folks under the age of 18 to please register themselves and an adult to accompany them. If you require a service dog to attend, please let us know and we’ll collaborate with you on how to keep you both comfortable and hydrated at this event.

April 25, 2026 — 1:00 pm - 4:30 pm ET
Rain Date: April 26, 2026
Last day to register: April 23, 2026

Excited about spring? So are the ephemerals! There are a few precious weeks in New England, just before forest leaves pop, when spring ephemerals appear. Join Sam, Amy, and special guest Beck to learn about and admire a variety of these wildflowers before they disappear for another year. Participants will be encouraged to make quick sketches or photograph (but never pick!) these precious beauties. We'll plan on walking 2.75 miles round trip on an out-and-back trail along the river. The route is flat and we'll be taking our time so we can fully appreciate the flowers and the company of other queer nature enthusiasts. Please note, there are no bathrooms at this trailhead and the route's proximity to town and water makes it difficult to "use the facili-trees" outside.

About our expert: Beck Powers (he/they) is a botanist, educator, and master naturalist with over a decade of experience teaching hands-on science in both classrooms and the outdoors. They hold an M.S. in Plant Biology from the University of Vermont and are passionate about making the natural world more accessible through inclusive learning spaces that foster curiosity, belonging, and connection.

Spring Lake Stroll - Vermont

March 22, 2026 — 9:00 am - 1:00 pm ET Rain date: March 29, 2026
Last day to register: March 20, 2026

Let's celebrate the first few days of spring - you'll still need your layers and microspikes, but we can dream of ice melt and snowdrops! We’ll enjoy this wide, flat trail while creating new friendships and appreciating the expansive views of Lake Champlain.

While this out and back hike can be up to 6.2 miles, we'll plan to walk out for 2 hours before returning to the parking area. The route is flat and we may find we cover more miles than expected. However, we will prioritize the comfort and safety of those walking and may turn around earlier depending on conditions and how folks are feeling. We always hike to the pace of the slowest person.

Because this path is exposed with water on both sides at times, it can feel colder than expected. Plan to wear winter layers with a good wind breaker or shell to stay comfortable. Microspikes are needed as ice can build up on the walking surface. There are no bathrooms at this trailhead.

We ask folks under the age of 18 to please register themselves and an adult to accompany them. If you require a service dog to attend, please let us know and we’ll collaborate with you on how to keep you both comfortable and hydrated at this event.

GENERAL INFO

Location: Colchester VT area (N’dakina (Abenaki) land)
Parking: Free dirt lot with multiple spots although no designated accessible spots. There are no restrooms at the trail head but there is a park with public facilities 0.5 miles away, so you might want to stop on your way there!
Pets: While we love pets, we ask that furry friends who are not service animals stay at home for this adventure. Tell them we said hi!

Winter Shoreline Stroll - Massachusetts

February 21, 2026 — 10:00 am - 4:00 pm ET Rain date: February 22, 2026
Last day to register: February 19, 2026

Layer up and grab some microspikes—it's time for a winter stroll! We’ll all walk together on this wide, flat trail so we can enjoy each other’s company and appreciate the expansive views of the Quabbin Reservoir. We can talk of the nearby ghost towns and maybe spot an eagle or loons! Get out of the house and enjoy the warmth of queer community with Amy and Sam on a long relaxed stroll.

While this hike is listed at six miles, that is the maximum length we intend to walk. The route is more or less flat and if conditions are good, participants may be surprised to find that it doesn’t feel that long. However, this event is more about spending time together than reaching a destination.

We will prioritize the comfort and safety of those walking and may turn around earlier depending on conditions and how folks are feeling. We always hike to the pace of the slowest person.

Even a stroll in the winter requires more preparation than a hike in warmer weather. Please plan to wear appropriate winter attire to keep yourself comfortable in the cold, and know that snow, ice, and wind could make this walk more challenging than it would otherwise be. There are no bathrooms at this trailhead.

Queer Winter Tree ID & Day Hike - Tennessee

February 7, 2026 — 1:00 pm - 5:00 pm ET
Last day to register: February 5, 2026

Join TVOP Volunteer Atticus for an introduction to winter tree identification!

Many trees of Tennessee lose their leaves in the winter and become tricky to identify, but through shared knowledge in collaboration with Ari Puentes, we'll hike some trails and learn how to identify based on other features.

Ari has studied mycology and has experience in dendrology within the southeast; he will point out trees' form, terminal buds, and bark for identification and focus on native species of the area.

The initial trail is a 0.8 mile loop with a narrow path and primarily crosses over compacted soil with gentle inclines throughout. It is within a forested area but the trail is well-maintained and clearly marked. The path is unobstructed but starts with a short set of stairs.

After finishing the initial trail, we will have the option of practicing winter tree ID on a 1.0 mile trail with a similarly narrow, compacted soil path through a forested area. There are more roots on this trail and it runs alongside a stream that intermittently flows throughout the year.

We ask folks under the age of 18 to please register themselves and an adult to accompany them. If you require a service dog to attend, please let us know and we’ll collaborate with you on how to keep you both comfortable and hydrated at this event.

Last day to register: January 17, 2026

Registration opens: January 2, 2026 at 11 AM EST

Join TVOP, Smartwool, and Stratton Mountain for a day of queer and trans JOY on the slopes!  We will spend the day skiing and snowboarding together, enjoying being outside with each other.  And we will have a private space to gather, so we can rest, drink water, eat snacks/lunch, and re-energize together!

Lift tickets, rentals, and lunch are all FREE!  Please indicate if you will need rental equipment and any dietary restrictions in the sign up form.  Lessons are not provided, so you should have some experience with downhill skiing or snowboarding.

For this event we welcome you to stay with or separate from the group as you need, and head down the mountain at whatever speed or level you feel comfortable with.  We will plan a time to meet up for lunch, so we can all be together!  A more detailed schedule will be provided in the week before the 31st.  Please reach out to us at hello@ventureoutproject.com if you have any questions about the format of the event.

Smartwool is generously outfitting us with some free clothing for this event! Please indicate your size and address on the form,  and we will ship you some cool Smartwool gear to keep you warm and cozy on the slopes (and beyond)!

We ask folks under the age of 18 to please register themselves and an adult to accompany them. This event is intended for the LGBTQ+ community. January 31, 2026 - 8:00 AM - 3:00 PM
Last day to register: January 28, 2026

Come celebrate the new year with The Venture Out Project!

Enjoy challenging yourself on this trail alongside some of Angeles National Forest's best: crisp morning air, sweeping forest views, and the smell of pine will accompany us as we put our legs to the test!

Some loose terrain exists on the trail, with dirt and rocks making it slippery, so wear shoes with good tread. Parts of this trail can be steep and exposed, and require some experience with technical hiking to navigate comfortably. For these reasons, this particular hike is not recommended for beginners.

We encourage you to assess your personal comfort level with this adventure. Feel free to reach out to us if you have questions about this hike.

Ducks & Cocoa - Western Massachusetts

January 25, 2026 — 11:00 am - 1:00 pm ET Last day to register: January 23, 2026

Join us for a stationary birding event as we recover from the holiday season and welcome 2026 with warm beverages, community, and (hopefully) weird ducks!

This is a free event focused on gathering as a queer and trans community, enjoying the beauty of nature in winter, and getting to know some of our winter resident species of waterbirds. Birders of all experience levels are encouraged. If you’re brand new to or just curious about birding, we enthusiastically welcome you to join us! MJ and Sam will go over birding basics like waterfowl identification and how to use binoculars. We’ll have field guides on site for you to use (we’ll help you get oriented to how to use these and other resources).

Come dressed warmly (with hand warmers if you’d like). Hats, gloves, scarves, warm jackets, long underwear, and layers are encouraged. Bring yourself, a friend (please register each person in your group), and we’ll have spotting scopes, extra binoculars, snacks, and hot beverages to share—or bring a picnic lunch and your warm drink of choice!

Accessibility: This is a stationary event at a riverfront park. Ample parking (including van accessible spaces) is available in a paved lot across the street, but participants should be aware that the potential for snow or ice could make this location less accessible to people using mobility devices. Please bring a seat with you—lawn chairs with a blanket or sleeping bag as insulation will keep us warm and allow us to change location if needed. Accessible restrooms and warming areas are available at a nearby gas station and visitor center, both a 1-2 minutes drive from our site. This event will be masks-optional. Please refrain from wearing any strong scents like perfume and cologne. If you’d like to share any access needs you have with us, we welcome you to do so in the registration form or by emailing rivervalleyma-vt@ventureoutproject.com.
